The Canine Vehicle Safety Act is a proposed initiative aimed at reducing the number of injuries and fatalities suffered by dogs due to vehicle-related negligence, both while parked and in motion.
In the United States, statistics show that nearly 25% of dog owners admit to leaving their dogs unattended in vehicles, often under the assumption that a quick errand or a running air conditioner makes it safe — yet countless dogs suffer heatstroke, severe medical complications, or death as a result. Similarly, while driving, 98% of dogs are not properly restrained, creating dangerous conditions in the event of sudden stops, accidents, or distractions. Open windows and unsecured seating expose dogs to falls, impact injuries, and even ejection from the vehicle.
This act advocates for criminal penalties or heavy fines for those who leave dogs alone in cars under any circumstances, while also pushing for a nationwide awareness campaign that educates pet owners on safe travel practices, including the use of dog seatbelts or crash-tested travel crates. While legislative change around in-vehicle restraint may be harder to mandate, our mission is to shift public behavior through education and outreach, ensuring that no pet’s life is put at risk due to convenience, oversight, or lack of knowledge. Our dogs rely on us completely — and their safety in vehicles should never be optional.
